Why Your Address Is a Legal Obligation, Not Admin
Nobody enjoys this task and almost everybody delays it. It is worth doing the week you move, for a reason that has nothing to do with tidiness: the address the DMV holds is where every notice it ever sends you goes.
The DMV side
California requires drivers and vehicle owners to notify the department of a change of address within a short window — the DMV's published requirement is ten days, and the change can be made online in a few minutes. Note that your driver record and your vehicle records are separate; updating one does not necessarily update the other, so work through both.
Why it matters more than it sounds
Every consequence in California's motor vehicle system starts with a notice sent to the address on file. Insurance-verification letters. Registration renewals. Suspension notices with deadlines attached. "I never received it" is not a defense that helps you, because the department sent it to the address you gave it. In our office, the suspensions that catch people completely unaware are almost always the ones where mail went to an old address for a year.
The insurer side
Tell your carrier separately — the DMV does not tell them. This matters because where the vehicle is garaged overnight is part of how the policy is rated, and because policy documents, renewal offers and cancellation notices go to the address the insurer holds. A renewal offer that never arrives is how a policy quietly ends.
Moving is a re-shopping moment
A new garaging address, and often a new commute, changes the inputs behind your price. It can move either way. What we would say plainly is that it is one of the few genuinely good moments to compare, because something real about your risk has actually changed rather than a renewal simply arriving.

- Update the driver record with the DMV.
- Update each vehicle record with the DMV.
- Call or message your insurer with the new garaging address and the date you moved.
- Set up mail forwarding as a backstop, not as a substitute.
- Check that the next document from each side shows the new address.

Does the DMV tell my insurance company I moved?
No. They are separate notifications and both are your responsibility. The DMV needs it for notices; the carrier needs it because garaging location is part of how the policy is rated.
Do I need a new license card for an address change?
The address change and a replacement card are different requests. The DMV publishes what it issues in each case — check its site so you are not paying for something you did not need.
What if I move often?
Update it every time, even for a short tenancy. The whole system reaches you by post, and a missed notice with a deadline on it is a far bigger problem than the ten minutes the update takes.
