What Traffic School Changes, and What It Does Not

Traffic school is one of the better deals in California traffic administration and one of the most misunderstood. It does something specific and useful. It does not do the sweeping thing people hope for.

What it does

When a court permits it and you complete an approved course, the conviction is recorded confidentially rather than appearing on the public record. The practical effect is that the violation is not visible in the way it otherwise would be — which is the part that matters when someone is looking at your record.

What it does not do

• It does not undo the citation. The case still resolved as a conviction.
• It does not remove an accident from the DMV's record.
• It does not affect a separate DMV action, which runs on its own track entirely.
• It does not make the fine go away — you generally pay the fine, the court's fee and the school.

Eligibility is the court's decision

Courts control who may attend and publish their own rules. The common limits are that it is available roughly once in an eighteen-month period, that certain violations are excluded, and that it is generally unavailable to holders of commercial licenses. Those are the usual contours, but the court named on your citation is the authority — read its page, not a general one.

The sequence that goes wrong

People request traffic school, complete the course, and never confirm the certificate reached the court by the due date. The school reports electronically in most cases, but the responsibility to make sure the court has it is yours. A completed course that arrived late is worth nothing.

Whether it is worth doing

For a single ordinary moving violation on an otherwise clean record, in our experience it usually is. Keeping a conviction off the public record is exactly the sort of thing that matters later, quietly, when you are not thinking about it. The cost is a few hours and a modest fee, and it is one of the few genuinely optional steps in this system that pays for itself.

What to tell your insurer
